Pomegranate play is one of my best childhood memories and the ultimate in playing with your food. In California, neighborhoods and backyards hold fruit-filled treasure trees of citrus, plums, peaches, avocados and even pomegranates.
Now Trader Joe’s sells pomegranate seeds already plucked from their reddish-orb home. “Back in the olden days” things weren’t so easy. We had to work really hard to get at it. And if you’ve ever eaten a pomegranate you know they STAIN. Big time.
So my mom would send my sister and I the hot tub to eat them. We had so much fun. There was such strategy involved. Do you eat them one at a time? Or gather them in a bowl and eat them by the handful? You definitely pinch them in each other’s face or pretend you’re bleeding.
So next time you see a lonely pomegranate for sale. Pick it up. Get the kids in the pool, the hot tub, or cover them in an old T-shirt. Hang out in the backyard or driveway and let them have at it in all its red-stained glorious mess.

I was fortunate enough to have a pomegranate tree in my backyard growing up & my brother & I loved trying to sneak in some snacking before dinner. Took us a while to learn that their was no way to get around the tell-tale signs of obtaining & devouring the seeds! Thanks for bringing back such a great memory for me! Got me jonesing to let my kids have the same experience
